Bangladesh - Mass Resignation From Parliament
(30 Dec 1994) Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Friday (30/12) said that
parliament would continue to function under the constitution,
despite the mass resignation of opposition legislators. Zia also
rejected the claim that after Wednesday's withdrawal of 147 MPs,
the existing parliament had lost its legitimacy. The three main
opposition groups on Wednesday submitted the legislators'
resignations to Speaker Sheikh Razzak Ali, on the grounds that the
government had failed to accept their nine-month demand that Zia
step down and agree to new elections under a neutral
administration. The groups, led by Sheikh Hasina Wajed's Awami
League, have vowed to intensify street campaigns demanding Zia's
immediate resignation.

(14 Feb 1996) Eng/Bengali/Natsound
In Bangladesh, the army has been called out to patrol the streets of the capital, Dhaka, on the eve of highly disputed national elections.
It's the first time that army troops have been seen in the streets of Bangladesh since civilian rule replaced a military-backed regime in 1991.
The move follows weeks of rising tensions, anti-government demonstrations and an opposition-sponsored 48-hour national strike in the run-up to polling.
The political opposition is calling for the elections to be boycotted, accusing the government of Khaleda Zia of corruption and stealing votes in previous by-elections.
Soldiers on the streets of Dhaka. Tomorrow is election day and they expect trouble.
Gun emplacements were set up today in the Bangladeshi capital.
The troops manning them are nervous. They have good reason to fear they will become targets of bombers intent on disrupting the polls.
Dissidents who oppose tomorrow's election are being rounded up and detained, for fear they will try to prevent people voting.
Polling stations will be heavily guarded by police and soldiers. The government is fortifying them against attack by political activists armed with homemade weapons, including guns and bombs.
For the first time in six months, the Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia held a press conference, accusing the opposition of terror tactics.
SOUNDBITE:
The opposition has not gone to the polls and is terrorizing people by bombing, shooting and striking every day. They are intimidating people. They are killing people. Police have been injured and killed. This is not democratic behaviour.
SUPER CAPTION: Khaleda Zia, Bangladeshi Prime Minister.
There is great personal rivalry between the prime minister and the opposition leader, Sheikh Hasina, the thorn in the government's side.
In the days leading up to the election numerous political rallies and marches have been held nationwide.
The opposition says the election is illegal and has refused to take part. Meaning the outcome is a foregone conclusion. The government party B-N-P is the only contestant and therefore cannot lose.
SOUNDBITE:
We know under this government there cannot be a free and fair election. People cannot choose their representatives under this government because the election and election result will be intimidated.
SUPER CAPTION: Sheikh Hasina, opposition leader.
Violence has been common in the run up to the elections with police and demonstrators blaming each other for the clashes.
Bangladesh is currently in the grip of a 48-hour general strike, called by the opposition. Anyone who breaks it risks being beaten or killed.
There are no cars on the streets, only anti-government protesters, marching, chanting and setting off home-made bombs.
Back from the campaign trail, the Prime Minister visited a hospital caring for police injured in election violence.
The sixteen men here are victims of shootings, bombings and beatings by opponents of the election.
At least the patients recovering in this ward will not be on duty tomorrow, when the violence is expected to continue.
The opposition says the situation won't be resolved until the Prime Minister calls off the polls and resigns.
